COUNCIL MEMBERS AWARD COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

Keep Cincinnati Beautiful Hosted Event Honoring Outstanding Communities

(CINCINNATI) November 12, 2009. Keep Cincinnati Beautiful honored volunteers and community leaders on Thursday night at the Just Desserts Ceremony sponsored by United Dairy Farmers and Great American Insurance Group.  Awards were presented to groups and individuals who have dedicated their time to serve their community during the last year.

Former WEBN legend and entrepreneur Robin Wood served as the Master of Ceremonies at the H. J. Benken Florist Greenhouse patio in Silverton. The following dignitaries presented awards: Council Member David Crowley, Council Member Cecil Thomas, and Council Member Chris Monzel.

THE EVENING’S STAR WINNERS

Gateway Project Award: College Hill Gardeners for their program titled “The City is Our Neighborhood.” They have been instrumental in beautifying their own community’s business district, thoroughfares, and traffic islands, but it takes real dedication to venture beyond.

Ongoing Project: BLOC Ministries, Inc. for their East Price Hill BLOC House & Coffee Shop and Greenspace Projects. To address safety concerns, blight issues, and the needs of disadvantaged youth and their families in Price Hill, BLOC Ministries is transforming vacant storefronts into community gathering places. These storefronts, which were once hotspots for criminal activity, are now open to the public for afterschool programs, education, and various sports and activities. One is now a fully-functioning coffee shop.

Green Event Award: Cincinnati Northside Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation for their “5k Reduce, Recycle, RUN” event. The event was billed as a fun run with a “green” theme and every effort was made to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible, from their online registration, using biodegradable or reusable products for food and drinks, and recycling water bottles.

Mini-Project winners: Helping Hands in Sedamsville for their Gateway Beautification Project  and Roselawn Community Urban Redevelpment Corporation for their “Connecting the Dots” project. Helping Hands organized various volunteer groups from local organizations and schools to clear out and beautify two major neighborhood gateways that had recently succumbed to blight and overgrowth. Roselawn beautified two public areas that any community would be proud to call their own. In an effort to draw local foot traffic between an existing public parking lot and another public greenspace area, the two areas were beautified with matching trees and plants.

Great American Cleanup Award: East Price Hill Improvement Association. On April 25, 2009, 290 volunteers collected 183 bags of litter and 3,000lbs of large trash—17 mattresses, sofas, loveseats, sinks, a fridge, 8 chairs and other debris. They also collected and recycled 45 tires and planted 5 flats of flowers.

Large project Award: Over-the-Rhine Community Council, and the Civic Garden Center for their “OTR Homegrown Urban Farm”. Thanks to this partnership between the Mayor’s Young Professional Kitchen Cabinet, the Service Employees International Union Local 1, and the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP Architecture Co-op Program, a .5 acre lot on Walnut Street that was once a blighted, vacant lot, is now a testimony to the success of the City of Cincinnati’s Urban Gardening Pilot Project.

The annual “Iron Eyes Cody” Award is awarded to individuals, companies or agencies that go above and beyond to help promote a clean and beautiful Cincinnati. This year Keep Cincinnati Beautiful honored Great American Insurance Group for their efforts on community improvement.

Keep Cincinnati Beautiful is a not for profit organization educating and encouraging individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments
