Research Paper

My research paper is about the impact of public art on the community. Specifically, I am examining the tipping point at which art can restore a community’s sense of cohesion and safety.  For my paper, I will be discussing organizations such as Art Works and Keeping Cincinnati Beautiful as a means to reach this goal in the Greater-Cincinnati community. I will also be comparing these community programs with other successful ventures from different communities across the country. I am curious to find out whether public art really can foster a safer living environment, create a more positive atmosphere, and provide the community with new avenues of expression by detracting from the negativities stemming from acts of public vandalism such as graffiti.  I believe that public art can be the unifying factor of our diverse community, and I believe that through such unification, we, as a community, will be able to cultivate a safer environment.

From my research, I have discovered that public art has a profound impact on its surrounding communities. In San Diego, all that was necessary to convert an unsafe and insecure part of town into a safe and thriving setting was a little community involvement, a little artistic creativity, and a little paint. Bringing the community together to replace the city’s grunge and graffiti with murals, mosaics, and beauty not only led to that safer environment, but also had positive impacts on many of the inner-city youths who were formerly contributors to the city’s unsafe atmosphere.

I am just so fascinated how such a small change can create such a huge impact on so many levels. Not only can whole communities be bettered and transformed, but also individual people can be transformed for the better.  I am excited to explore the possibilities  Cincinnati presents for similar solutions.
