This paper reports on the Go Over the Rhine 5k Run/Walk. The event takes place on June 20th, and it is a showcase of recent community efforts to clean up the streets in Over the Rhine. The paper addresses the questions, who is involved, when will the event take place, and what is needed for the event to really help the community. The event has many positive aspects, but in order for it to truly succeed event organizers need to balance three main issues: enticing people from outside Over the Rhine, as well as including the current residents, and keeping the event unique.
This event is important to Over the Rhine, because it is similar to a “Grand Opening” of sorts for OTR. All of these efforts have been made, and while they are far from complete, this provides a reason for people to really see what the community improvement groups are most proud of. This event will not just showcase the event, but also draw potential volunteers and donors to the area to continue the beautification efforts. Attracting these people is very important in the fight to improve Cincinnati. Without volunteers and donations, the community organizations like Keep Cincinnati Beautiful and 3CDC would not be able to continue their campaigns against crime in the city.
The main ideas addressed are how to entice these outside residents. Why it is important to keep the current residents involved, and how to prevent an “Us vs. Them” feeling within the community. Also, the event ends in an after party with an art show. While this is a unique combination of events, it is important to keep the event unique to Cincinnati to really connect the residents and non-residents to each other as well as to the community itself.
