"When I found out I had been assigned an honors section of English Composition 102 I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to integrate Civic Service Learning. For our project, I asked students to attend two Civic functions in Cincinnati: one Cincinnati City Council meeting and one Community Council Meeting for any of Cincinnati’s 53 neighborhoods. This experience prepared students to think critically about a civic issue in Cincinnati in order to write an outstanding research paper. Informed by a presentation on the broken window theory and urban renewal in Cincinnati by Keep Cincinnati Beautiful’s Linda Holterhoff (my mother) and Cincinnati Police officer Lt. Colonel Cindy Combs, student s were even able to suggest exciting strategies to help improve the community they studied by the end of the quarter!"
