DAFFODILS & DAYLILIES RESULTS

DD I-471We would like to extend a BIG THANK YOU to all our Daffodils & Daylilies friends. To date we have received over $12,000 in donations from nearly 500 friends, including memorials and honorarium. In preparation for Spring 2010 we will be planting daffodils, daylilies as well as other perennials along our highways during Make A Difference Day which is Saturday October 24, 2009. If you would like to volunteer for MaDD contact Shelly or call 513-352-4385.

The Daffodils and Daylilies program began as a joint effort with the Cincinnati Park Board to beautify highway greenspace areas and to deter littering along the highways. To date, volunteers have planted over three quarter of a million daffodils & daylilies and countless other perennials such as white blossom trees, Russian sage, and rudbeckia at over 15 highly visible locations (click here to see photos).

If you would like to donate to the Daffodils & Daylilies program click here. Many of our friends choose to donate in honor of or in memory of a loved one.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION UPDATE

Education 5th QuarterJust because the traditional school year has ended, doesn't mean that education stops for the children of Cincinnati! The 5th Quarter, is a new post school, summer education program designed to bring nature into the lives of children living in the city as well as reinforce academic learning. Keep Cincinnati Beautiful provided environmental programming throughout the month of June to Roll Hill Academy, Pleasant Hill Academy and Pleasant Ridge Montessori schools with a total of 32 programs for students k-8th grade and a total of 466 students.

We also spent a week with the Cincinnati Parks summer program, Nature Next Door. It was an action packed week visiting city parks to provide environmental education to hundreds of children. KCB presented the water pollution program, Fred, The Fish, to these campers and reinforced what each child could do to keep our water clean and make a positive difference in their community.

What's happening for the rest of the summer? The Keep Cincinnati Beautiful Education deptartment is busy presenting environmental education programs to summer camps and library programs throughout the city. If you are interested in having an ECO program, please contact us at Barb 352-4387/Sadie 352-4386 to schedule.

We are also getting ready for the 2009-2010 school year. If you would like to get a jump on school programming and are interested in our environmental education programs, we will begin to scheduling programs August 1st. Contact us at 352-4387/352- 4386.

THE FRAY HELPS KEEP CINCINNATI BEAUTIFUL

frayenewsOn Monday, June 29th Keep Cincinnati Beautiful was invited to The Fray concert at Riverbend Music Center's PNC Pavilion. The Grammy nominated group is part of Reverb, an organization that educates and encourages musicians and their fans to do their part in keeping the environment clean. The Fray joins artists like Dave Mathews Band, Phish, and Coldplay in making their tour as green and environmentally friendly as possible. For example, on each and every tour The Fray makes sure waste reduction techniques and recycling take place backstage, they use biodegradable catering products, cut down on plastic by using re-usable water bottles, they sell eco-friendly merchandise, they use non-toxic cleaners and recycled bathroom tissue on tour busses, and they invite local non-profit groups to each show.

Keep Cincinnati Beautiful enthusiastically accepted this invitation to be part of the Eco-Village at Riverbend. Before the concert Keep Cincinnati Beautiful was there to talk about ways to be friendly to the environment while also handing out pocket ash- trays to promote the new cigarette litter campaign, "This is Litter Too." Fans that stopped by the Eco-Village were able to sign up to win free T- Shirts and a Fray poster that was autographed by the band. Keep Cincinnati Beautiful would like to congratulate Emily Luther on winning the poster and extend a big thank you to The Fray for inviting us to their show and doing their part to make their tour green and environmentally friendly!

COMMUNITY PROJECTS TAKING SHAPE THANKS TO KCB GRANTS

cumminsvilleThe City of Cincinnati's Safe and Clean Neighborhood Fund is a grant program that is designed to support and encourage community-based efforts to improve safety, eliminate blight and increase livability through problem-solving projects. The fund will disburse up to $50,000 from the fund each year. The maximum grant amount is $10,000 per project. There is a required match to the grant, and funds are available on a reimbursement basis.

The fund provides financial support for one-time costs (not on-going operating expenses) for initiatives that improve the quality of life within the City's neighborhoods. Projects must demonstrate measurable outcomes of change in the conditions of safety, cleanliness and livability as a result of having completed the funded program response.

"This program allows communities to implement projects such as planting trees, install benches, and create artwork to revitalize areas within the community that are in danger, or have become blighted." said Linda Holterhoff, Executive Director of Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.

The community of South Cumminsville has benefited from the Safe and Clean Neighborhood Fund through the creation of stepping stones made out of recyclable materials. The project has brought local volunteers to work together for a common goal: community improvement. South Cumminsville will create murals later this month to accompany the stepping stones. Communities concerned with combating litter, graffiti and crime are encouraged to apply for a grant soon. Funds are given out on a first-come first-served basis.

Neighborhood funding criteria can be found here. The next deadline is August 7th. Applications received after the deadline will be considered for the following quarter if funds are available.

KCB PROMOTES CIGARETTE LITTER PREVENTION WITH "THIS IS LITTER TOO"

TILTThis summer, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful will be focusing on our campaign, "This is Litter Too." The project focuses on cigarette litter prevention in Cincinnati, a very important issue because cigarette butts have become the most littered item in the United States. They beat out the pop cans, water bottles, and paper products. 90% of all cigarettes smoked end up in our environment. This is because not all people realize that cigarette butts are a form of litter and are unaware of the negative effects they have on the environment.

What can be done?
It's a fact that most people don't understand the harms of throwing their butts on the ground. Our campaign "This is Litter Too" will focus on educating smokers about the detrimental effects of not disposing of cigarette butts properly. Whether you're a smoker or not, you can start helping protect your community against cigarette butt litter by spreading the word. Contact or stop by Keep Cincinnati Beautiful for your free portable ashtray today! They are distributed at local events such as Party in the Park, concerts, and local bars. Even if you're not a smoker, pick up a few to distribute to your friends. They are great for outdoor parties, bars, and road trips. It's time to lead by example and start making a difference in Cincinnati.

For more information click here to visit our "This Is Litter Too" campaign website, or here to visit Keep Ameria Beautiful's cigarette litter prevention site.

Turn off the lights. Your mom was right: there is no reason to leave the lights on after you leave the room. Nearly 15 % of your annual electricity bill goes toward lighting your house. In the summer, turning the lights off will also keep the house cooler, so be sure to flip the switch when you leave the room. Click here to learn more about it from the U.S. Department of Energy.
