Education Highlights 2009 - 2010

The Education Department of Keep Cincinnati Beautiful has been very busy educating students from preschool through high school on the topics of litter prevention, recycling and beautification.  Most important, we have stressed how each child plays an important role in his/her neighborhood by serving as stewards of the environment.

WWizardSince Sept. 2009, KCB has provided programming for over 5,000 students in the classroom; taken 350 students on field trips to the Rumpke landfill; and presented our litter prevention assemblies, The Wartville Wizard and The Wings of Wonder/How Litter Hurts Animals show to 5,200 students.  We would like to thank the Charles H. Dater Foundation for its generous support of the Wartville Wizard program which has just completed its 7th season.  KCB would also like to thank the William P. Anderson Foundation for funding this program.  Without their support, these assemblies would not be possible!

The students of Cincinnati were also an important part of the 2010 Great American Cleanup.  This year 31 schools and over 2,300 students participated in their own campus/neighborhood cleanup.  What a great opportunity for students to recognize the negative effect of litter and the positive impact their involvement in the cleanup effort has on their community. One student from Oyler School said, “I have never seen so many cigarette butts on one street, it’s disgusting!”

Growing Green Habits: KIDS teaching kids through Service Learning is our new KCB education program that began this year.  The purpose of this program is to grow mentors and environmental leaders in our teens and college age students. We have currently trained 8 University of Cincinnati students, half of these students will be participating in our 5Th Quarter summer program and look forward to our mentors starting in the classroom in September.  Rockwern Academy 8th grade class have served as environmental educators to students in grades k-3rd grade and have reached thus far an audience of 120 students! KCB expects the Growing Green Habits program to be a service learning program in many schools next year.

PAPERWhat are KCB educators up to this summer?  The 5th Quarter is returning for a second summer to provide academic enrichment and environmental education to children in designated Cincinnati Public Schools.  Look for us at Carson Elementary, Quebec Heights, Chase, Roll Hill and Hays Porter schools.  This program is a great way for students to continue their education during the summer and have fun at the same time.
KCB will continue their partnership with the Cincinnati Parks by providing environmental programming at their Nature Next Door Camp for one week in June.  Go to the Cincinnati Parks website for camp locations.

Enjoy your summer and we look forward to sharing details regarding KCB education in our fall 2010 newsletter. If you may need additional information related to our programs, feel free to contact Barb (352-4387) or Sadie (352-4388).
