SMALL BUT MIGHTY – STS. PETER & PAUL ACADEMY RECYCLING NATIONAL WINNER
(CINCINNATI ,OH) December
12, 2008. Sts.
Peter & Paul Academy may be small, but it certainly is
mighty!Recently, in a nationwide plastic recycling contest
sponsored by “Keep Cincinnati Beautiful” and “Keep America Beautiful”, the Academy took first place in
the Cincinnati area and 51st place in
the nation. As participants of the “Return the Warmth” environmental
education program, Sts. Peter & Paul Academy students, families and supporters
recycled enough plastic bottles (PET) to be one of the winning 100 schools
across the country!
The small
private academy collected 1,784 lbs of plastic bottles or 18.583 lbs per
student! What was thought to be an optimistic goal of recycling 80 Million
plastic bottles became an overwhelming 189 Million plastic bottles collected
and recycled for the “Return the Warmth” program. The recyclable plastics collected
were made into fleece jackets. For their prize, the Academy won 500 of
these soft fleece jackets.
Many
remember that Sts. Peter & Paul Academy was richly blessed with donations
from around the Tri-State area when they opened their doors as a new elementary
school in 2007. What a wonderful opportunity now that the Academy has the
chance to give back some of the blessings they received.
On Friday, December 12, 2008 at 10:30
am, Sts. Peter and Paul Academy will host several charitable
organizations at the school with each receiving a portion of the fleece
jackets. St. Rita’s School for the Deaf, St. Vincent de Paul Society, St.
Peter Claver School, Valley Interfaith, St. Boniface, and the Outreach Programs
at Roger Bacon High School, Mt.
Notre Dame High SchoolReading
Community Schools
are among the recipients. and
Besides
teaching the children of Sts. Peter and Paul Academy the importance of recycling to keep
this Earth beautiful, the children are learning the lesson of sharing their
treasures with others. During this season of giving and remembering our
neighbors, the Academy is happy to share a little warmth at the holidays.
Keep Cincinnati Beautiful is a not
for profit organization educating and encouraging individuals to take greater
responsibility for improving their community environments
