Recycling at School
Whether you're a teacher, a PTA leader, or a school administrator, KCB has the information you need to "green" your school! We offer environmental programs for K-12 classrooms and we offer the resources to implement environmentally sound strategies in your building. After all, the best way to teach is by example.
Education/School ProgramsEducation is the most important part of ensuring success in a recycling program. Keep Cincinnati Beautiful does this in a variety of ways:
- Classroom presentations: "Recycle This", Paper Recycling, The Story of Stuff and It Pays to Recycle.
- Field trips: arrange trips to the Rumpke Landfill and MRF (Material Recovery Facility) for teens; trips to the Rumpke Landfill and Trailside Nature Center for 3rd through 8th grade.
- Contests: make schools aware of contests to further encourage and promote recycling in schools.
- Focus on teachers and staff: educate teachers about recycling utilizing staff meetings and teacher workshops.
- Assist and monitor school recycling: Follow the Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District School Recycling Assistance Program.
Grants & ResourcesKCB offers mini-grants for an array of projects - we only ask that they positively impact our community environment and engage the students as well! Examples include:
- Purchasing recycling containers and can crushers to recycle in a lunch room
- Buying seeds and materials for a butterfly garden
- Installing a rain garden
Abitibi Paper Recycling Program
Abitibi-Consolidated Recycling Division provides fundraising opportunities to local schools through paper recycling. Bright green and yellow containers - called Abitibi Paper Retrievers® - are placed in highly visible, convenient areas where residents can drop off their newspaper, magazines, shopping catalogs and mail. Even areas that already provide curbside recycling are successful in raising money.

Abitibi website to learn more.
The Recycle Challenge
Rumpke Recycling and Busch Gardens Sea World partners with Greater Cincinnati and Greater Columbus schools and organizations to raise more funding through recycling. It's called The Recycle Challenge, and your organization may qualify.
The Recycle Challenge invites schools and community organizations to collect aluminum cans for additional funding. Students, faculty and families can contribute to a recycling container located on school or organization property. Rumpke Recycling collects the cans and pays your organization according to the volumes collected. Schools can earn up to $3,000 annually.

Waste Audits
If your school is not currently recycling, the first step is to conduct a Waste Audit to see how much waste you're generating, as well as what type. You can contact your local waste hauler for a free waste audit.

You can also conduct your own waste audit! Keep America Beautiful has made it easy by creating a workbook called the School Recycling Guide. You can purchase copies
