Classroom Presentations

Keep Cincinnati Beautiful staff provides FREE environmental education programming to any and all classrooms in the public, private and parochial schools of Cincinnati. Someone from our staff will come to your classroom to present a fun and informative program to your group or class. The three program areas are: Environmental Outreach, Litter Prevention, and Recycling. 


General Environmental Outreach

Fred the Fish (Grades K-4) - Fred is a little fish whose curiosity gets the best of him as he sets out to explore the Mill Creek. He has no idea that there is a lot more than water in the water! We will follow Fred on his journey and see the effects of water pollution on wildlife as well as discuss what we can do to help keep the water clean. (45 minutes)

Eco-Art (Grades 2-8) - Through the use of hands-on projects, we'll explore the concepts of over-packaging and reusing packaging materials (a notion very familiar with teachers). It's a creative way for school-age children to learn about the reuse leg of the reduce-reuse-recycle triangle. We ask that each class supply its own glue, scissors, and crayons or markers. We'll supply the fun. (45 minutes-1 hour)

The Mystery of Landfills (Grades 3-8 and 9-12) - What happens to our trash after it is picked up at curbside? What is the difference between a dump and a sanitary landfill? How are landfills designed to minimize the effects of solid waste disposal on our environment? Using a model of a landfill to visually depict the components of its design we will discuss the answers to these and other questions. (45 minutes)

Understanding your Carbon Footprint (Grades 7-12) - Students will calculate the amount of carbon dioxide they emit on a yearly basis and uncover the biggest contributors to their individual 'footprint'. We will discuss ways to alter their daily living in order to make a positive impact on the environment. (45 minutes)



Litter Prevention

Don't Trash the 'Nati (Grades 4-6 and 7-12) - Alphonso Wesson, who has directed MTV's 'The Real World' and 'Making the Band', helped us to produce this Emmy-Award-Winning video, which features the thoughts and feelings of Cincinnati young people. Their comments center on their own sense of personal pride, and how it keeps them from trashing their neighborhood. After the video, we'll investigate your students' thoughts and feelings about litter, its effects on the neighborhood and community pride, and actions they can take to deal with it. (30-45 minutes)

Changing Litter Habits (Grades 4-6 and 7-12) - This program is intended as a follow up to our 'Don't Trash the 'Nati' presentation. Working in cooperative groups, students will examine some 'clean' litter and decide among themselves what kinds of litter are the most harmful. When consensus is reached, each group will explain its opinions to the rest of the class. (45 minutes)

Wartville Wizard (Grades Preschool-3) - What would it take to get the people of Wartville to stop littering and put their trash where it belongs? 'The Wartville Wizard' finds a way that will delight the children of your classroom. Using the popular children's book, and with a little help from some of the characters, we'll find out that there are wizards with the power to fight litter in your very classroom! (45 minutes)

Jitter, Don't Litter (Grades Preschool -1) - This is a story that will set your kids' toes to tappin'. With colorful characters from 'How Spider Stopped the Litterbugs' we'll dance and sing our way to the realization that everyone (even kids) can help keep our city litter-free. (30 minutes)

How Litter Hurts Animals (Grades Preschool-4) - All children have a warm spot in their hearts for animals. In this program we introduce children to the idea that litter not only makes the neighborhood look trashy, it can also har pets and other wild things. Through the use of visuals and age-appropriate discussions we will establish a connection that is deep and meaningful to them. (30 minutes)


Recycling

Paper Recycling (Grades K-8) - This is one of our most popular programs. Students learn where paper comes from, its history, its future and why recycling paper is beneficial to the environment. Then they will operate their own paper recycling factory and produce recycled paper right in your classroom. (45 minutes) - The photo on the right shows our staff presenting this program at the University of Cincinnati campus.

Recycle This! (Grades 2-10) - This program involves a discussion about the natural resources from which different kinds of packaging are made, our ability to recycle packaging as well as its biodegradability (or lack thereof). We'll demonstrate how recycling our packaging saves resources, landfill space and energy. The program concludes with a game in which students practice sorting their recyclables for curbside collection. (45 minutes)

It Pay$ to Recycle (Grades 7-12) - An exercise in Logic, Math, and Environmental Science! Students will use statistics to calculate the amount of waste generated by the people of Cincinnati, the costs of waste disposal, and the amount of waste disposal cost that can be saved through recycling. What other benefits (besides fiscal) does recycling offer? It really does pay to recycle! (45 minutes)
